The Lector performs a vital function during the Liturgy of the Word. Along with proclaiming the readings of the day, the lector is also called upon to lead the intercessions after the homily. Despite the use of a microphone, the Lector needs to have a voice which projects out to the people. He or she is expected to go over the readings several times prior to the Mass in order to become familiar with any challenging words, inflections, and so forth, before actually delivering them from the ambo. The Lector will be given a book that has the readings, which they can study ahead of time. This guide will have the pronunciation of biblical words as well as the meaning of the particular readings in order to aid the lector. Initial training is done with follow-up as needed.
